285th Battalion Parachutists “FOLGORE” – Campaign of Tunisia 1943
Few survivors to the battle and escaped from the encirclement, numerous wounded discharged from hospitals and parachutists back from deposits of Tobruk, Derna and from logistic base of El Dabà, are grouped at the end of November 1942 in Tripoli and they form the 285th Battalion Parachutists “Folgore” leaded by Cap. Carlo Lombardini, at the dipendences of the 66th Regiment Infantry of Trieste Division. Immediately sent in fight on the coast band in Tripolitania, at Zavia and Zuara, at the beginning of 1943 is in Tunisia and stand out him in the fight on the difensive lines of the Mareth, of Buerat, of Uadi Akkarit and at Enfidaville. On 20 April 1943 at the remains of “Folgore”, about one hundred parachutists, the task of regaining the rock of Takrouna, fallen in enemy hands. After fierce fights, only few valorous can occupy the ramparts of the rock but invested by a violent artillery fire, back to the base of the hill, encircled by the English forces. Other fights for the parachutists survivors, at Gabes, Sfax, at Nabeur and Capo Bon where, on 13 May 1943, ends definitely the Folgore era in North Africa.
